Nagpur’s Malvika Bansod, who entered the badminton court at the age of just 8, created history on Thursday. She knocked out 2012 Olympic bronze medalist and former number one Saina Nehwal at the Indian Open in just 34 minutes. Malavika registered the biggest win of her career by defeating Saina 21-17, 21-9 in the second round of women’s singles.

Malvika’s parents, who have studied at Shivaji Science College in Nagpur, are dentists. Her mother got her master’s degree in sports science only so that she could give the right direction to her daughter’s sports career. From childhood, Malvika was top in both studies and sports. Malavika, who has secured more than 90 percent marks in class 10th and 12th, is currently pursuing engineering from SRM University, Chennai.

His father Dr Prabodh Bansod runs a dental clinic in Nagpur and his wife Dr Tripti Bansod helps him in this work. Talking exclusively to Dainik Bhaskar, Dr. Bansod told that his mother has played an important role in the success of Malavika. Malvika has been training with coach Sanjay Mishra in Raipur for the last three years. Dr. Trupti is staying with her after leaving Nagpur to ensure that Malvika does not face any problem and her training is not hindered. On the daughter’s success today, the father said that this is a step and Malvika has to achieve many more milestones in the coming time. Malvika is currently training in Raipur.

Dr Prabodh further told that he and his entire family are very happy on this success of his daughter. There are still a few more tournaments that Malavika has to participate in. When Malvika comes to Nagpur after her completion, the whole family has made preparations for a big celebration here.

Dr Prabodh told that when Malvika started playing, there was neither synthetic badminton court in Nagpur nor good training system, but we provided her every facility which a good player needs. Mental support is very important in sports, so we have helped Malavika every step of the way. Dr Bansod told that we never let Malvika feel lack of anything, which was the reason why she could focus completely on her sports. According to Dr. Bansod, her mother is a major contributor to Malavika’s success.

A firm from Nagpur helped financially

When Malavika started participating in sub-junior and junior level tournaments, the family realized that the cost of international travel to participate in the tournament was going to be high and finding sponsorship was difficult. After earning a good name in sports at the junior level, Nagpur-based Vishwaraj Infrastructure Limited has signed a five-year contract with Malvika. This company gives Malavika Rs 4 lakh every year, as well as bears the cost of coaching, nutrition and fitness.

On the basis of her experience in synchronizing studies with sports, Malavika said that some things need to be taken care of in order to integrate sports and studies. There is a need to make the academic system responsive to the needs of women players, because women players also do not want to lose their studies along with winning medals for the country. Malavika did wonders in junior level too

Malvika had also achieved success in junior and youth category before achieving international success at senior level. Malavika first won the Under-13 category title at the state level and then became the champion in Under-17 as well. Malavika won three gold medals in the Indian School Games Federation competitions. At the same time, Malavika has won nine gold medals in the junior and senior category tournaments at the national level.

She made an impressive debut at the Senior International level in 2019 by winning the title of the International Future Sirija Badminton Tournament played in Maldives. Malvika, a left-hander, proved that Maldives’ success was not a joke by winning the Annapurna Post International Series title in Nepal within a week. She has also won gold medal in Asian School Badminton Championship and South Asian Under-21 Regional Badminton Championship.

Malavika has caught the attention of the Government of India and various sports organizations with her brilliant performance. Till now he has also received many sports honors.
